Monroe Mustangs Women’s Basketball Drops Home Contest to Lackawanna

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., January 12, 2019 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team dropped a 75-56 decision to Lackawanna College Saturday afternoon at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs fall to 13-5 on the season, while the Falcons improve to 11-3.
 
Saturday's contest was back-and-forth to start, seeing the Mustangs go up, 10-9. The Falcons then scored five straight points to take a four-point lead. Shortly after, another four points in a row for Lackawanna gave the visitors an 18-12 advantage and forced the Mustangs to use a timeout. The Falcons closed out the opening frame with a 20-13 edge over the Mustangs.
 
The Falcons made four three-pointers to open the second quarter, taking a 32-17 lead in the process. Another six-point run for the Falcons later put them up, 38-19. The Mustangs chipped away at the deficit with five straight points, but an 8-2 run by the Falcons put them back up by 20. Monroe then closed out the half on an 8-0 run, narrowing the gap at 46-34 heading into the break.
 
The Mustangs slowly got themselves closer early in the third, getting back within 10 at 56-46 with 4:22 left in the period. The Falcons then scored the final four points of the quarter to take a 60-46 lead into the fourth.
 
The Falcons pushed their lead to 17 points by the 6:37 mark of the fourth. Another six straight points then gave Lackawanna a 73-52 lead with just 2:32 left to play. The Falcons held on to win by 19.
 
Courtney Irabor led the Mustangs with 15 points on the afternoon. Shanice Graves followed with 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Graves also matched India Keene with four assists to lead the team. Aneisha Lyons added 12 points.
 
The Mustangs hit the road on Tuesday, Jan. 15, to visit SUNY Sullivan in Loch Sheldrake, N.Y. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 27 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
