NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., January 10, 2019 – The Monroe College Mustangs took round one against the Monroe College Express on Thursday, defeating their Bronx campus counterparts, 82-46, at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs improve to 13-4 on the season with the win, while the Express fall to 6-10.
The Mustangs had control early on in the contest, opening the game with a 10-2 run. Destinee White then hit a three for the Express to get them back within five, but the Mustangs responded with a 9-3 run to close out the first quarter with a 19-8 advantage.
The Mustangs scored the first four points of the second quarter to go up by 15. Five straight points by the Express put them back within 10, but the Mustangs responded with 11 straight points to take a 34-13 advantage. A seven-point run for the Mustangs shortly after put them up, 41-15, eventually closing out the half leading the Express, 41-19.
The Mustangs came out of the locker room playing stellar defense, opening up the second half on a 14-1 run before the Express made their first field goal of the third quarter, a three-pointer by Tatyana Forde. The Express began to find the bottom of the net, but the Mustangs kept their scoring up as well, closing out the third with a 63-32 lead.
The Mustangs continued to maintain control of the game in the fourth, opening the final frame with six straight points. Late threes by
Shanya Gonzalez and
Rahsay Swift put the Mustangs up by 36, and the Mustangs went on to wrap things up with that same lead.
Phyness Baldwin led the Mustangs with 20 points on the evening, matching the Express' Julie Trowers for the game-high. Baldwin also led the team with five steals.
Aneisha Lyons registered her third double-double in the last four games, finishing with 14 points and a team-high 11 rebounds to go with five assists.
Shanice Graves added 10 points and six boards, while
Devon Adams scored eight and blocked a pair of shots.
India Keene provided a team-leading six assists off the bench.
The Mustangs get back to work on Saturday, Jan. 12, in a newly scheduled contest against Lackawanna College at the MAC. Tip-off in New Rochelle is scheduled for 1 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 27 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
