Monroe Mustangs Men’s Basketball Rolls Past Roxbury

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., January 10, 2019 – 11 different Mustangs got on the board on Thursday, as the Monroe College men's basketball team defeated Roxbury Community College, 97-49, at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs improve to 13-5 on the year with the win, while the Tigers drop to 6-6.
 
Both teams went back-and-forth early on, reaching an 11-11 stalemate six minutes into the affair. Thomas Binelli then broke the tie with a three, sparking an 8-0 run that put the Mustangs up, 19-11. A big 15-point stretch for the Mustangs gave them a 36-15 lead with 4:28 left in the first half. Including their 15-point run, the Mustangs closed out the half on a 21-2 run, taking a 42-17 advantage into the half.
 
Mouhamadou Gueye led the Mustangs at the break with eight points, five rebounds and three steals. Juan Felix Rodriguez followed with seven points and four boards.
 
The Mustangs built upon their lead quickly to open the second half, rattling off 10 straight points to go up, 52-17. A pair of threes by Lovro Bulesic shortly after had the Mustangs ahead, 58-23, eventually leading the Mustangs on an 11-2 run that put them up, 63-23. The Mustangs continued to build upon their lead, later putting up 13 straight points for a commanding 87-33 lead with just 6:01 remaining. The Tigers went on a run late, but Monroe closed things out with the 97-49 win.
 
Thomas Binelli led the Mustangs with 19 points on Thursday after shooting 8-of-11 from the field. Lovro Bulesic made four three-pointers to finish with 12 points. Ebrima Jassey Demba added 10 points off the bench. Daniel Cabassa and Gueye matched with eight points and a team-high seven rebounds apiece.
 
The Mustangs get right back to work tomorrow evening at the MAC, when they host Genesee Community College for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 27 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
