NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., January 11, 2019 – The Monroe College Mustangs men's basketball team made it eight wins in their past nine games on Friday with an 86-59 victory over Genesee Community College at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs improve to 14-5 on the season with the win, while Genesee drops to 9-5.
The threes were falling early for the Mustangs on Friday, as they drained four in the first eight minutes en route to an 18-6 lead. The Mustangs later led 26-13 before the Cougars went on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to six points. Monroe then turned things around to go back up by 13 at 33-20 with 3:54 left in the half. The Mustangs led by 16 late in the frame before a buzzer-beating three by
Juan Felix Rodriguez left the home team up, 44-25, heading into the break.
Will Martinez led the Mustangs with 11 points and five rebounds through the first 20 minutes of Friday's contest.
Daniel Cabassa followed with nine points, while Rodriguez added seven points and four assists.
After a back-and-forth start to the second half, a three by Rodriguez put the Mustangs ahead by 20 with 13:13 on the clock. Shortly after, five straight points by
Thomas Binelli made it a 60-35 game. Another long ball two minutes later by Binelli pushed the Mustang lead to 28 points with just 9:01 left in regulation. The Mustang lead surpassed 30 points when
Lenny Kadisha nailed a three with 1:31 to play, putting Monroe up, 84-53. The Mustangs closed things out with a 27-point advantage.
Zion Styles finished with a team-high 14 points in Friday's win. Rodriguez, Martinez and Binelli all matched with 13 points apiece. Martinez added a team-best six rebounds, while he and Rodriguez each dished out five assists.
The Mustangs get back to work on Thursday, Jan. 17, when they host Harcum College at the MAC in their first Region XV matchup of the season. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 27 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
