TYLER, Texas, September 29, 2018 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team closed out its weekend at the Tyler Junior College Invitational with a pair of highly competitive five-set matches, but unfortunately fell in both contests to Hutchinson Community College and North Central Texas College. The Mustangs close the weekend with a 9-9 overall record.
MATCH 1: Hutchinson 3, Monroe 2 (21-25, 25-23, 25-27, 25-22, 16-14)
The Mustangs and Blue Dragons played a very even match on Saturday, including two separate sets that needed extra points to decide them, but Hutchinson ultimately came out on top after picking up a two-point win in the final frame.
Maria Camila Salazar led on offense for Monroe, finishing with 26 kills and a .442 hitting percentage in the match. She added three block assists.
Karla Figueroa and
Tereza Strnadlova each had 13 kills, while Figueroa added 13 digs and four aces.
Giulia La Longa was also in double figures with 11 kills.
Maryorie Cruz Baez handed out a team-high 34 assists, while
Daline Rios added 24. Rio also served up a pair of aces and picked up 13 digs.
Nashally Eleutiza picked up a team-high 32 digs.
MATCH 2: North Central Texas 3, Monroe 2 (25-18, 19-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-10)
The Mustangs' final match of the weekend was much like the one before it, going five sets before Monroe fell in a tough final frame.
Salazar continued her hot streak, registering 18 hills and two blocks in the loss. Figueroa followed with 14 kills, while La Longa added 10. Cruz Baez had 22 assists, while Rios recorded 21 of them. Eleutiza added another 25 digs, and matched Strnadlova with a team-high three service aces.
The Mustangs return home on Thursday, Oct. 4, when they host Queensborough Community College at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, and the newly added club men's volleyball team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
