BEL AIR, Md., September 22, 2018 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team visited Harford Community College for a tri-match on Saturday, defeating both Delaware Technical & Community College and Harford each in three sets. The Mustangs improve to 7-6 on the season with the pair of wins.
MATCH 1: Monroe 3, Delaware Tech 0 (25-10, 25-3, 25-8)
The Mustangs got straight to business on Saturday, putting in a strong effort to knock off Delaware Tech in three sets. The Mustangs had a dominant three frames, hitting .429, .500 and .524 in the three sets, respectively, while holding their opponents to a negative hitting percentage in each game.
Maria Camila Salazar led the Mustangs with 12 kills, hitting an impressive .647 in the win.
Giulia La Longa added 10 kills and hit .500.
Cristina Robles led with 11 digs, while
Karla Figueroa added 10.
Maryorie Cruz Baez picked up 17 assists, while
Daline Rios dished out 11. Rios led the team with four service aces.
MATCH 2: Monroe 3, Harford 0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-13)
The Mustangs once again hit incredibly well in Saturday's finale, accumulating a .330 hitting percentage across three sets against their eventual Regional Championship opponent. They hit .393, 219 and .382, while once again holding their opponents to a -.110 clip.
Salazar hit .571 in Saturday's second match, leading all athletes with 13 kills. She also added a pair of blocks.
Julia Alves picked up seven kills and hit .600 in the win. Cruz Baez handed out 23 assists, while Rios added 12. Cruz Baez also served up five aces.
Nashally Eleutiza picked up 22 digs to lead the Mustangs in the win.
The Mustangs look forward to a difficult weekend down in Tyler, Texas, beginning Thursday, Sept. 27. They will compete in the Tyler Invitational, starting with Tyler Junior College on Thursday at 6 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, and the newly added club men's volleyball team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
