TYLER, Texas., September 27, 2018 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team dropped a three-set match to No. 13-ranked Tyler Junior College on Thursday in the opener of the Tyler Junior College Volleyball Invitational at Wagstaff Gymnasium. The Mustangs fall to 7-7 on the year with the loss, while Tyler improves to 12-4.
The Mustangs dropped the three sets by scores of 25-13, 25-17 and 25-17 to the 13th-ranked team in the nation on its home court.
Maria Camila Salazar picked up where she left off last week, hitting .391 to lead Monroe with 11 kills and a block.
Karla Figueroa added eight kills and seven digs.
Nashally Eleutiza led the Mustangs with 17 digs.
Maryorie Cruz Baez dished out a team-high 14 assists.
The Mustangs continue their weekend in Tyler on Friday, Sept. 28, with another pair of matches as part of the Tyler Invite. The Mustangs start their day against Blinn College at 4 p.m., followed by a tough matchup against No. 9 Hill College at 6 p.m. The Mustangs will be looking to avenge a first-round loss to Hill College from the 2017 NJCAA Div. I National Championship Tournament.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, and the newly added club men's volleyball team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
