Monroe Women’s Volleyball Takes Down Nassau on the Road

GARDEN CITY, N.Y., September 19, 2018 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team visited Nassau Community College on Wednesday, defeating the Lions on the road in three sets. The Mustangs improve to 5-6 on the year with the win, while the Lions drop to 10-8 overall.
 
The Mustangs jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead in the opening set on Wednesday. The Lions then picked up two straight before Monroe went on a 9-2 run to make it a 17-5 game. The Mustangs finished things up in the first set with a 25-8 win to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
Things started off a little closer in the second frame, as the Mustangs led by just three at 7-4 early on. The Mustang lead grew slowly, taking a 16-8 lead before going on a 9-1 run to close out the game with a 25-9 win, taking a 2-0 edge on the evening.
 
Monroe once again took a sizeable lead over the Lions in the third set, going up, 11-2, early on in what proved to be the final stanza. Nassau got within seven at 13-6, but the Mustangs kept the pressure on the home team and took a 21-9 lead before the Lions got two straight points. Those ended up as the final two points of the night for the home team, as the Mustangs rattled off the last four points to claim a 25-11 win and a 3-0 sweep of the Lions.
 
Karla Figueroa led the Mustangs with 12 kills and a .524 hitting percentage in just two sets on Wednesday. Giulia La Longa added eight kills, while Tereza Strnadlova threw down five. Nia Cornegy led the team with four blocks on the night, while Nashally Eleutiza and Maria Camila Salazar each had two. Eleutiza led the team with 21 digs. Maryorie Cruz Baez dished out 17 assists, while Daline Rios handed out 13 of her own.
 
The Mustangs will next play on Saturday, Sept. 22, when they visit Harford Community College for a tri-match. Monroe will take on Delaware Technical & Community College at 12:30 p.m. that afternoon, followed by Harford at 2 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, and the newly added club men's volleyball team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
