Monroe Baseball Picks up Run-Rule Victory over Hudson Valley

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., April 5, 2018 – Everything clicked for the Monroe College baseball team on Thursday, as the Mustangs rolled to an 11-1 run-rule victory after five innings over Hudson Valley Community College at Dick Caswell Field. The Mustangs improve to 14-6 on the year with the win, while the Vikings drop to 3-5.

Marquis Orozco led off the bottom of the first with a walk, and then Edwin Feliciano Jr. ripped a single through the left side. Lenyn Napoleon hit a hard grounder back to the pitcher, who went to third with it, but threw it past the third baseman, allowing Orozco to score the first run of the game.

Shadrach Meulens singled to open the second, and then Joseph Encarnacion followed with a single of his own. Juan Torres was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Orozco delivered a big blow, a two-RBI double to left to give the Mustangs a 3-0 lead. Feliciano then grounded out to second, but it was enough to plate Torres to make it a 4-0 game.

The Mustangs once again loaded the bases in the third, setting up another two-RBI double by Orozco that put the Mustangs ahead, 6-0. With the bases loaded once again, Napoleon smacked a single up the middle, plating another pair of runs to make it an 8-0 ballgame. Once again with the bases loaded, Iasid Bernal roped a three-run double over the left fielder's head, pushing the lead to 11 runs.

The Vikings put runners on the corners in the fourth when Mustang starter Andrew Pena was called for a balk, bringing in Hudson Valley's first run of the day, but it would not be enough to keep the game from ending via the run rule after five frames.

Andrew Pena picked up the win to improve to 2-0 on the season for the Mustangs. He tossed the complete five innings, striking out six batters while allowing just one run and four hits. Hudson Valley starter Jacob LaFerriere took the loss to fall to 1-1.

Orozco finished 3-for-3 with four RBIs, two runs and a pair of doubles to lead the Mustangs to victory. Bernal went 1-for-3 with a three-RBI double. Meulens batted 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

The Mustangs get back to work tomorrow, April 6, when they kick off a four-game series against Region XV foe ASA College with a doubleheader at Dick Caswell Field. First pitch of Game 1 is set for 2 p.m.
