Feliciano’s Walkoff Highlights Monroe Baseball’s Doubleheader Split with ASA

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., April 6, 2018Edwin Feliciano Jr. hit a 10th-inning walkoff single after the Monroe College baseball team made a late comeback in Game 2, lifting the Mustangs to a doubleheader split with Region XV foe ASA College on Friday at Dick Caswell Field. ASA took Game 1, 13-1, but Monroe earned a 4-3 comeback victory in Game 2 in 10 innings. Monroe moves to 15-7 on the season and 1-1 in Region XV, while ASA goes to 12-6 overall and 1-1 in region games.

Game 1: ASA 13, Monroe 1 (6 innings)
The Avengers got on the board first in Friday's opener. The first three ASA batters drew walks to start the top of the first, but the Mustangs managed to get a runner out at the plate trying to score on a wild pitch. Another two walks then brought in ASA's first run of the day for an early 1-0 lead. A fielder's choice that included an error by the Mustangs brought in two more runs to give the visitors a 3-0 edge.

Troy Davern caught a break with one out in the second, as a grounder to second was thrown past the first baseman, allowing Davern to trot to second. He then scored on a line-drive single through the right side by Joseph Encarnacion, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

ASA turned in a big inning in the third, only needing one hit to tally six runs and take a 9-1 lead.

With the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, ASA's Jose Santana ripped a single up the middle, bringing in two runs to put the visitors up, 11-1. Back-to-back groundouts then brought in another pair of runs to make it a 13-1 game, eventually forcing a run-rule finish after six.

Luis Sanchez Tejada improved to 3-0 for ASA after the complete-game victory. Francisco Urena took the loss for Monroe to fall to 2-1.

Marquis Orozco, Leandy Castro and Encarnacion each hit 1-for-3 in Friday's opener. Troy Davern scored a run, while Encarnacion knocked him in.

Game 2: Monroe 4, ASA 3 (10 innings)
The scoring in Game 2 finally got going in the top of the fifth. Luis Casado led off the frame for ASA with a single to short. He moved over to second on a wild pitch. A fielding error in Rohandry Javier's at-bat put runners on the corners. Javier then tried a hesitation steal, and the throw to second trickled into the outfield, allowing Casado to score and give the Avengers a 1-0 lead.

The Avengers got themselves on the board once again in the sixth. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Misael Constanzo hit into a double play, but it allowed a run to score and make it a 2-0 game. With first and third and two outs, a failed pickoff attempt at first allowed the runner from third to score and push ASA's lead to 3-0.

The Mustangs finally broke through in the bottom of the eighth. Shadrach Meulens was hit by a pitch with one away, and moved to second on a wild pitch. He advanced to third on a groundout, and after Edgardo Bernard drew a walk, a balk brought in Meulens to make it a 3-1 game. Castro then roped a single through the left side, bringing in Bernard to draw within a run.

Monroe came up in the bottom of the ninth looking to tie or win the game. Edwin Feliciano Jr. led off the frame with a walk, and then Orozco dropped down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move him to second. Encarnacion struck out, but on strike three, Feliciano took third, and the ball got past the third baseman and into the outfield, allowing Feliciano to score and tie the game at 3-3.

Iasid Bernal led off the bottom of the 10th with a hard single up the middle. Gustavo Gonzalez came on to pinch run for him, and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bernard. With two outs and Juan Torres at the plate, Gonzalez tried to steal home, and would have been in easily, but the pitch hit Torres, sending him to first and sending Gonzalez back to first. But in the next at bat, Feliciano stroked a single through the right side, bringing home Gonzalez to win the game.

The Mustangs got a pair of strong pitching performances in Game 2. Starter Antonio Frias tossed five frames, striking out 12 batters while allowing one unearned run on three hits. Jason Alvarez threw five innings in relief, earning his first win of the season after striking out eight batters and giving up one earned run on three hits. ASA's Ruben Cabrera took the loss after giving up four runs in relief.

Feliciano finished 3-for-4 with a run and the walkoff RBI in Game 2. Meulens batted 2-for-4 with a run scored. Castro went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

The Mustangs and Avengers will play two more tomorrow, April 7, at Dick Caswell Field. First pitch of Game 1 is set for 12 p.m.
