Mustangs’ JV Men’s Basketball Tops Monroe Express, 74-64, in First Intra-College Matchup

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., February 24, 2018Nolen Irby recorded a double-double, and Rakim Bryant scored a game-high 23, as the Monroe Mustangs' JV men's basketball team topped the Monroe Express in an intra-college, sophomore day showdown, 74-64.
 
Bryant put the Mustangs on the board first, and after the Express took the lead with 17:07 to play in the first half, the Mustangs responded with a 7-0 run to take it right back and wouldn't trail the rest of the way.
 
A 7-0 run by the Express to close the gap to four to end the first and open the second half, was followed by a 9-6 run by the Mustangs to bring the lead back out to seven.
 
An 8-0 run midway through the second half brought the lead back out to 10, and a 5-0 run, powered by three free throws from Christopher Davis allowed the Mustangs to pull away with the victory.
 
Bryant led the Mustangs 23, while Irby recorded his first double-double of the season, with 11 points and 11 assists on Sophomore Day.
 
Joining Bryant and Irby in double figures were Isaiah Allen-Smith and Davis, both of whom tallied 10 points.
 
The Mustangs shot 41.3 percent from the field and 47.6 percent from beyond the arc, including a barrage of six threes, four from Bryant, in the second half.
 
With the win, the Mustangs finish the season 15-14, 8-4 at home, 7-9 on the road and 5-7 in the AIPGC.
 
The Mustangs will host the AIPGC Championship Tournament beginning Friday, March 9 with the quarterfinal games between the No. 3 and 6 seeds, and the No. 4 and 5 seeds.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of Monroe's Bronx campus has six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning with their inaugural seasons in the fall of 2017.
