NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., December 8, 2018 – The Monroe College Mustangs JV men's basketball team picked up its second straight American Independent Post-Grad and Collegiate Conference (AIPGCC) victory on Saturday, defeating Prestige Preparatory Academy by a score of 70-47 at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs improve to 5-3 on the year and 2-0 in conference play with the win.
The Mustangs got off to a solid start with back-to-back baskets by
Aaron Burton. The Mustangs were up 11-9 before a layup by
Isaiah Allen-Smith and a three from
Troy Tallman made it a seven-point game. The Patriots managed to rally back, taking a 24-22 lead with 4:46 left in the first half.
The Mustangs quickly took back control of the game with four straight points from
Anthony Monti, but a three by Prestige Prep's Kyle Brown put the Patriots back up by one. Monroe then scored six in a row to take a five-point advantage. With time winding down, Breizh Askew sank a layup for Prestige Prep to make it a three-point game, but
Alfredo Robles nailed a jumper at the buzzer to give the Mustangs a 38-33 advantage heading into halftime.
Burton, who registered a double-double the night prior at College of New Rochelle, led the team with 12 points and seven rebounds at the half. Allen-Smith contributed seven points, while Monti and
Jamal King added six points apiece.
The Mustangs made the first two buckets of the second half to take a nine-point advantage. By the 14:53 mark, the Mustangs took a 10-point advantage, and kept improving upon their lead from there. After going up 48-38 at the 13:52 mark, the Mustangs went on a 13-4 run to grab a 19-point advantage with 8:10 left to play.
Monroe kept rolling, scoring another five points to take a 66-42 lead with six minutes remaining. The Patriots scored the next three points, but another layup by Tallman made it a 25-point game with just over three minutes left. Justin Quinn made the final two points for Prestige Prep, but the Mustangs walked away with a 23-point win.
Burton led the team with 14 points and 10 rebounds for his second straight double-double. Monti followed him with 11 points, adding a team-high five assists. King added 10 points and six boards in the win.
The Mustangs play next on Friday, Dec. 14, when they host the College of New Rochelle JV team in a rematch from Friday evening's matchup. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 27 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
