NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., December 14, 2018 – Behind an all-around scoring effort, the Monroe Mustangs JV men's basketball team defeated the College of New Rochelle JV Blue Angels, 95-57, on Friday at the Monroe Athletic Complex.
After
Aaron Burton hit two free throws to tie the game at 7 with 17:12 remaining in the first half, the Mustangs went on a 17-0 run to take a 23-7 lead.
The Blue Angels cut the deficit down to single digits, but the Mustangs ended the half on another run, this time outscoring CNR 21-9 over the final seven minutes of the half to take a 57-30 lead into halftime.
The Mustangs continued their charge to open the second half, opening with a 14-3 run to stretch their lead to 77-31 with just under 15 minutes remaining, outscoring the Blue Angels by 11 in the second half to earn a 38-point, 95-57, victory.
Luis Quinones led the Mustangs with 16 points, while
Aaron Burton added 10 points and six boards.
Isaiah Allen-Smith also scored in double-figures with 13 while
Troy Tallman added 11.
The Mustangs shot 50 percent (40-for-80) for the game, as every single Mustang scored a bucket.
The Mustangs are back in action on Sunday, Dec. 16 when they travel to Loch Sheldrake, N.Y. to take on SUNY Sullivan JV at 4 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 27 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
