NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., November 17, 2018 – With four scorers in double figures and
Aaron Burton registering a double-double, the Monroe College Mustangs JV men's basketball team defeated Herkimer County Community College JV, 91-59, Saturday afternoon at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs improve to 2-2 on the year, while the Generals fall to 0-3.
Burton finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.
Isaiah Allen-Smith had another big game, totaling 18 points and seven boards.
Troy Tallman contributed 15 points, while
Anthony Monti added 11 while dishing out five assists.
The Mustangs were able to grab the lead early on, going up, 18-9, by the 14:50 mark of the first half. The lead hit double-digits when
Troy Tallman drained a three with 7:08 left in the half, giving Monroe a 33-23 lead. The Mustangs closed out the half on a 17-3 run, taking a 52-29 edge into halftime.
Burton, Allen-Smith and Tallman were all in double figures already by the end of the first half. Burton led the team with 14 points, while Allen-Smith and Tallman contributed 13 and 12, respectively. Allen-Smith had a team-high seven rebounds, while
Kevin Benjamin Jr. passed out four assists.
The Generals scored the first two points of the second half, but the Mustangs scored the next seven to take a 59-31 advantage early in the frame. A three by Allen-Smith with 14:12 to go put the Mustangs ahead by 31 at 66-35. The lead hit 30 again with just over 10 minutes to play when
Kaynaan Longley sank a layup. The Mustangs were up by 28 with 1:28 left in the game, but back-to-back threes by
Jahmir Appleton gave Monroe its largest lead of the game at 91-57. The Generals hit the last basket of the game, but the Mustangs picked up the 32-point victory.
Benjamin matched Monti for a team-high five assists in the win. Appleton finished with eight points off the bench. Longley also added eight points to go with five rebounds.
The Mustangs get the entire Thanksgiving break off before getting back to work on Friday, Nov. 30, as part of the Monroe Invitational at the MAC. The Mustangs will take on Bryant & Stratton College, with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 27 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
