NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., October 4, 2018 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team returned home to the Monroe Athletic Complex on Thursday and defeated Queensborough Community College in three sets. The Mustangs improve to 10-9 on the season with the win, while the Tigers drop to 12-1.
The Tigers took the first point of the match when they Mustangs could not return the opening serve, but Monroe took control back with five straight points. Queensborough then took 3-of-4 to get within two, but Monroe responded with another three in a row to take a 9-4 lead and force a Queensborough timeout. The Mustangs took the first point after the break, but the Tigers took the next four to tie things up at 10-10. Things remained close until the Mustangs took an 18-13 lead, forcing another timeout. The Mustangs kept their distance, closing out the first set with a 25-18 win.
The Mustangs ran out to a 6-0 lead to start the second frame, but the Tigers took the next four to make it a 6-4 game. The Tigers kept the momentum going and drew within one at 8-7, but the Mustangs scored 8-of-10 to take a 16-9 advantage. Things kept rolling for the Mustangs the rest of the way, as they wrapped up the second frame with a 25-12 win.
The Tigers took the early advantage in the third set, going up 12-6. The Mustangs came galloping back shortly after, cutting the deficit to just a point at 13-12. The Mustangs finally jumped into the lead when they took a 17-16 advantage. Monroe held a slim 22-21 lead late in the frame, but managed to close things out with a 25-23 win to finish up the match.
Maria Camila Salazar led the way with 15 kills, hitting .294 in the win. She also had four blocks to lead the team.
Maryorie Cruz Baez dished out a team-high 25 assists.
Nashally Eleutiza had 14 digs, while Cruz Baez followed with 10. Cruz Baez also had a team-leading two service aces.
Giulia La Longa and
Jaddy Duarte each added three blocks.
Monroe takes the weekend off and gets back to work next week when they visit Wallace State Community College-Hanceville for the Wallace State Tournament in Hanceville, Ala. The four-match weekend begins for the Mustangs on Friday, Oct. 12, when they take on Vincennes University at 4 p.m., followed by Coastal Alabama Community College at 6 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, and the newly added club men's volleyball team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
