ANNANDALE, Va., October 20, 2018 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team had a successful trip down to Virginia on Saturday, picking up a pair of three-set victories over host Northern Virginia Community College and Richard Bland College. The Mustangs leave the weekend with a 12-9 overall record on the season.
MATCH 1: Monroe 3, Northern Virginia 0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-12)
The Mustangs played a dominant first match against their hosts for the day, hitting .274 while allowing the Nighthawks to hit just -.120.
Karla Figueroa led the way for Monroe offensively in their first match, throwing down 10 kills and hitting .320 while also making two blocks and serving up four aces.
Daline Rios dished out a team-high 24 assists.
Maria Camila Salazar had six kills, two blocks and a team-best seven digs.
MATCH 2: Monroe 3, Richard Bland 0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-21)
The Mustangs kept their momentum rolling in their second match of the day to sweep Richard Bland in three sets. Figueroa had another stellar match, producing 16 kills and hitting .314. Salazar also had a strong match with 11 kills and a .350 hitting percentage to go with a pair of blocks.
Julia Alves picked up a team-high five blocks. Rios had 18 assists, while
Maryorie Cruz Baez contributed 15.
Nashally Eleutiza finished with 15 digs in the win.
The Mustangs return home for Sophomore Night on Monday, Oct. 22. They will take on Nassau Community College at the Monroe Athletic Complex starting at 6 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, and the newly added club men's volleyball team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
