Monroe Women’s Basketball Closes out MLK Classic with Impressive Defense in Win over Erie

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., January 21, 2018 – The Monroe College women's basketball team allowed a season-best 29 points en route to an 86-29 victory over Erie Community College on Sunday in the finale of the Monroe College MLK Classic at the Monroe Athletic Complex. Monroe improves to 13-8 on the year with the win, while the Kats fall to 4-11.
 
The Mustangs got off to a hot start, forcing four turnovers in the first 90 seconds en route to a quick 8-0 advantage. They later push it to 11 turnovers, five blocked shots and a 24-0 lead with three minutes left in the first. When the first quarter reached its end, the Mustangs held a 28-0 lead after forcing 14 turnovers and blocking six shots.
 
The Mustangs opened the second quarter with five more points, taking a 33-0 lead before Erie finally got on the board. The Kats scored six straight, but the Mustangs then scored nine of the next 11 points to take a 42-8 advantage. Monroe went on to close out the first half with a 48-13 lead over the Kats.
 
Monroe opened the third quarter on an 8-0 run to go ahead, 56-13. They later went on a 10-4 run to make it a 66-17 game, and closed out the quarter with another six-point rally to take a 72-21 advantage into the final frame.
 
The Mustangs started an 11-0 run in the third and finished it early in the fourth quarter to take a 77-21 advantage.  They kept the same formula going for the rest of the game, closing it out for a 57-point victory.
 
Lisana Burnett and Phyness Baldwin matched for a team-high 15 points on Sunday. Burnett also picked up eight rebounds and six steals. Mercy Amechi finished with 10 points and eight boards, while Jessica Degree also grabbed eight rebounds, adding four points, two assists, two blocks and three steals. Shanice Graves contributed 13 points and five rebounds, while Amani Williams scored nine points, pulled down six boards, dished out six assists and stole the ball twice. Jada Banks scored 11 points and handed out six assists.
 
The Mustangs hit the road on Thursday, Jan. 25, to visit Union County College in Cranford, N.J. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level as of the fall 2017 season.
