NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y, January 18, 2018 – The Monroe Mustangs JV men's basketball team forced 29 turnovers and shot over 50 percent from the floor as they topped ASA College JV, 93-37, Thursday at the Monroe Athletic Complex.
The Mustangs opened the first half on a 15-2 run, and never looked back, scoring 15 straight points after ASA College JV evened the score at two points apiece. Monroe, who never trailed, extended their lead to as large as 31 with 1:49 to play in the half and headed into the halftime break with a 30-point, 51-21 lead.
Monroe held ASA JV to just 19.4 percent shooting in the first half, while outrebounding the Avengers 31-13. The Mustangs also shot 60.5 percent from the field, and scored 38 points in the paint in the first half, compared to just four for the Avengers.
From there, the Mustangs pulled away in the second half, opening the second period with a 13-0 run, and outscoring the Avengers 21-4 in the second half to take home a 93-37 victory, moving to 9-7 on the season.
Two Mustangs recorded double-doubles as
Marcus Thompson tallied 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Joans Gjeci scored 10 points to go along with his 12 rebounds.
Brian Kennedy and
Isaiah Allen-Smith also scored in double figures for the Mustangs, tallying 15 and 14 points, respectively.
The Mustangs held the Avengers to 22.2 percent shooting from the field and 17.2 percent from beyond the arc, while outrebounding ASA, 52-30.
The Mustangs return to action when they head to Newark, N.J. to take on The Robinson School on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 6 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of Monroe's Bronx campus has six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning with their inaugural seasons in the fall of 2017.
