Baldwin’s 29 Fuels Monroe Women’s Basketball to Road Win at Harcum

BRYN MAWR, Pa., January 12, 2018Phyness Baldwin netted a season-high 29 points, 22 of which were scored in a big second half, lifting the Monroe College women's basketball team to a 70-56 victory over Harcum College on Friday. The Mustangs improve to 10-7 on the year with the win, while the Bears drop to 7-10.
 
Baldwin shot 12-of-22 from the field in Friday's win. She made 9-of-12 tries in the second half, including 4-of-7 three-pointers in the final 20 minutes. Baldwin also dished out four assists and picked up five steals. Baldwin's hot finish helped the Mustangs outscore their hosts, 43-23, in the final two quarters to erase a six-point halftime deficit and pick up the win.
 
Amani Williams and Cristina Soriano each finished with 11 points in Friday's victory. Williams added three assists and three steals, while Soriano grabbed eight boards and blocked three shots. Lisana Burnett filled up the stat sheet with seven points, 10 rebounds, four assists and five steals. Jessica Degree was a force to be reckoned with under the rim, picking up a career-high 16 rebounds to go with six points and six steals.
 
As a team, the Mustangs shot 40.8 percent from the field on 29-of-71 shooting, adding five threes. They totaled an impressive 25 steals in the win, while also pulling down 47 rebounds and handing out 20 total assists.
 
The Mustangs' scheduled matchup against Monroe Community College on Sunday has been postponed, so the Mustangs will play next on Monday, Jan. 15, against Region XV foe ASA College at St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level as of the fall 2017 season.
