No. 3 Monroe Women’s Soccer Blanks Essex on the Road

NEWARK, N.J. September 12, 2017 – The No. 3-ranked Monroe College women's soccer team hit the road for the first time this season on Tuesday and shut out Essex County College by a score of 5-0. The Mustangs improve to 2-0 on the year with the win, while the Wolverines fall to 1-1.
 
Angie Ponce got the Mustangs on the board in the 20th minute off a feed from Anya Donelan, making it a 1-0 game. Late in the half, Yolanda Albalat doubled the Monroe lead on another assist by Donelan. With just two minutes left before halftime, Juliana Pires netted her first of the day after a helper from Albalat to send the game into the break with a 3-0 score in favor of the visitors.
 
Just seven minutes into the second frame, Pires scored her second of the day on a pass from Andrea Rodriguez to make it a 4-0 game with plenty of time left on the clock. Kayla Notarnicola then tallied the final score of the day in the 87th minute to cap off a five-goal day for the Mustangs.
 
Carmen Proffitt earned the shutout victory on Tuesday, stopping one shot to start her year 1-0. Nicolette Craig took the loss for Essex after making four saves and yielding five goals.
 
Pires finished with two goals on two shots in Tuesday's win. Albalat finished with three points on a goal and an assist. Ponce and Notarnicola added the other two goals, while Donelan handed out a pair of assists.
 
Monroe outshot Essex in the game, 19-5, while putting nine shots on goal compared to just one for the home team. The Mustangs also earned all four of the game's corner kicks.
 
The Mustangs will look to improve to 3-0 when they visit Harford College on Thursday, Sept. 14. The game is set to begin at 4 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, will have six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning in the fall of 2017.
