Groton, Conn. – The Monroe College Baseball team used a pair of strong pitching performances to sweep a doubleheader from UConn Avery Point on Sunday, 1-0 and 6-4. The Mustangs finished the regular season with an overall record of 20-22.
Game one saw three Monroe pitchers combine for a one-hitter. They struck out 12 en route to the 1-0 victory.
Joel Urena got the start, and tossed 4.2 innings of shutout ball. He fanned six and surrendered a leadoff single, but didn't allow another hit.
Jose Sierra relieved him for 1.1 innings and struck out three. Finally,
Jason Alvarez threw the final two innings to earn the victory. He is a perfect 5-0 on the year.
The game went into an extra inning with no score.
Wayne Roberts led off the eighth with a double.
Isaiah Torres walked, and Roberts then stole third.
Carlos Torres drove in Roberts with an RBI fielder's choice. Monroe took the game, 1-0.
UConn wasted no time getting on the scoreboard early in game two with a run in the first, but Monroe answered with two in the third.
Edgardo Bernard was hit by a pitch, and got to second on a passed ball. He scored when
Isaiah Torres laced a double to left. Torres got the second run on a
Marcus Espinal RBI fielder's choice. Monroe led, 2-1.
UConn regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third. They added another one in the fifth, and took the 4-2 lead into the seventh.
Monroe took the lead for good in seventh.
Adonis Garcia and Roberts both walked. Garcia came in on an RBI double from
Isaiah Torres.
Carlos Torres followed with a two-bagger of his own, plating both Roberts and
Isaiah Torres and putting Monroe ahead, 5-4.
Michael Crispino capped the scoring with an RBI single that brought in
Carlos Torres.
Edward Nunez pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the win.
The Monroe College Baseball team will now move on to the Region XV Championship, where they will face ASA College in a best-of-five tournament. Game one is scheduled for noon on Wednesday, May 8, at Dutchess Stadium.
