Wappingers Falls, N.Y. – Monroe College sophomore
Oliver Mailloux surrendered just three runs across 6.1 innings to help the Mustangs defeat ASA College, 6-4. With the win, the Monroe College Baseball team took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five Region XV championship, and Mailloux improved to 3-3 on the season.
Monroe got on the board with a two-out rally in the second.
Troy Davern was hit by a pitch, then moved to second on an
Adonis Garcia single.
Andy Karlan walked to load the bases. From there,
Wayne Roberts laced a double to center that scored Davern and Garcia. The Mustangs led, 2-0.
The Avengers cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the inning, and the game moved into the third with Monroe ahead, 2-1.
Michael Crispino reached when he was hit by a pitch. Next,
Marcus Espinal continued his hot streak with a triple to right, driving in Crispino and making the score 3-1. Espinal has now hit safely in nine of his last ten games, batting .486 during that stretch.
The Mustangs pushed the lead to 5-1 with a pair of runs in the seventh. Espinal collected his second hit of the game, an RBI single that plated
Isaiah Torres, who had reached on a base hit. A
Shadrach Meulens RBI ground out scored Crispino for the second run. ASA responded with a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning, making the score 5-3.
Manuel Pizarro relieved Mailloux in the bottom of the seventh and retired the final two batters without incident.
Monroe got a key insurance run in the eighth when Karlan led off with a double, moved to third on a bunt from Roberts, and scored on a Torres base hit. The score remained at 6-3 until ASA took their final at-bat.
A leadoff homer made the score 6-4, and a single and two walks loaded the bases with no outs.
Edward Nunez came in to face his old team with the tying and winning runs on base. The first batter hit a fly ball to left that fell in front of
Adonis Garcia, who fired home to nab the runner. Meulens then threw the ball to third to catch the runner from second, giving Monroe an unusual double play. Two batters later, another fly ball to left ended the game and preserved the save for Nunez.
Monroe now leads the best-of-five series, 1-0. The teams will face each other again in game two at noon on Thursday, May 11
th, at Dutchess Stadium.
