Wappingers Falls, N.Y. – The Monroe College Baseball team earned its third-straight Region XV championship with a 13-2 victory over ASA College at Dutchess Stadium on Monday. The team took the best-of-five series, 3-1.
Monroe sophomore
Oliver Mailloux pitched five innings of one-hit ball to earn his second win of the championship. He struck out four and allowed just one run.
The Mustangs struck first with a pair of runs in the third.
Wayne Roberts led off with a single, and
Isaiah Torres drove him in with an RBI double. Later in the inning,
Marcus Espinal also connected on a two-bagger, scoring Torres and putting Monroe up, 2-0.
The Mustangs put the game out of reach in their next at-bat.
Andy Karlan led off with a double, the first of his two hits that inning.
Edgardo Bernard moved Karlan to third with an infield single. Karlan scored on a balk that also advanced Bernard to second.
Isaiah Torres got his second RBI of the game with a hit that plated Bernard and made the score 4-0.
Carlos Torres and
Michael Crispino followed with walks, and the Mustangs had the bases loaded with one out.
After a pitching change from ASA,
Isaiah Torres scored on another balk. Espinal then drove
Carlos Torres home with a sacrifice fly, making the score 6-0. After
Adonis Garcia walked, loading the bases again, the score went to 7-0 on the third balk of the inning. The final run came courtesy of a
Kevin Garcia RBI single. The Avengers got a run back in the bottom of the fourth, bringing the score to 8-1.
The Mustangs scored three more times in the fifth to go up, 11-1. The bases were loaded after Roberts singled and Isaiah and
Carlos Torres both walked. From there, Crispino ripped the second hit of the inning to score Roberts and put Monroe up, 9-1. Two batters later,
Adonis Garcia was hit by a pitch, forcing in
Isaiah Torres and making the score 10-1.
Kevin Garcia picked up his second RBI of the game with a single that scored
Carlos Torres.
ASA got a run in the sixth and the Mustangs led 11-2 heading into the ninth. Monroe got two runs on four hits in the ninth with RBIs from Crispino and
Kevin Garcia. Garcia got a career-high three RBIs in the game. The Mustangs won, 13-2.
The Monroe College Baseball team will now advance to the District Championship, which will be hosted by Florence–Darlington Technical College in Florence, South Carolina this coming weekend. Game details are still being finalized.
