New Rochelle, N.Y. – The Monroe College Baseball team posted a 2-1 mark on a weekend road trip through Maryland and West Virginia. The Mustangs defeated Potomac State College on Saturday and split a doubleheader with Hagerstown Community College on Sunday.
Monroe got very strong pitching in all three contests over the weekend. The Mustangs opened play on Saturday with a 3-1 victory over Potomac State.
Oliver Mailloux pitched a complete game to earn his first victory of the season. He allowed just one run on three hits and struck out 11. Monroe got a pair of runs in the fourth on hits from
Edgardo Bernard,
Carlos Torres, and
Nick Hernandez. The Mustangs added another run in the seventh when
Michael Crispino doubled and scored on an
Isaiah Torres RBI single.
On Sunday, Monroe split a doubleheader with Hagerstown, dropping game one and prevailing in game two. The opener saw
Joel Urena suffer the loss and fall to 3-2 on the year. He allowed two runs over five innings of work and fanned five.
Manuel Pizarro tossed a scoreless inning of relief. Monroe trailed 2-0 heading into the seventh, but
Isaiah Torres and
Shadrach Meulens were both hit by pitches.
Marcus Espinal loaded the bases with a bunt single. From there,
Kevin Garcia hit into a double play that plated Torres and moved Meulens to third. The Mustangs couldn't get Meulens in and dropped the game, 2-1.
The team rebounded to take the second match, 2-1.
Antonio Frias improved to 3-3 with the complete-game win. He allowed just two hits in seven innings of work. In the third, the Mustangs loaded the bases on consecutive singles from Crispino,
Troy Davern, and
Isaiah Torres. They got a run when Meulens was hit by a pitch. The second run came in the fifth, when Davern singled, stole second, and came in on an
Isaiah Torres base hit.
With the 2-1 road trip, the Mustangs improved to 15-18 overall. They are scheduled to face Sullivan County Community College on Tuesday, April 25
th, at 4:00 PM in Loch Sheldrake, New York.
