New Rochelle, NY – Four members of the Monroe College Women's Basketball team scored in double figures as the Mustangs fell to ASA, 58-54, on Tuesday. Monroe is now 17-6 on the season, and the loss ends a six-game winning streak.
Monroe took control immediately in the game, jumping out to an 11-4 lead after one quarter. ASA scored the first point of the game, but the Mustangs used a 9-0 run to pull ahead, 9-1. The points in the scoring spree came from
Lisana Burnett,
Jada Banks,
Shania Johnson, and
Cristina Soriano. After another Avengers foul shot, Monroe got a pair of free throws from Burnett to make the score 11-2. ASA had two more points and trailed 11-4 after one quarter. Monroe held the Avengers without a field goal for the first ten minutes of action.
A
Camilla Kilinc three-pointer with 2:19 left in the second quarter gave Monroe its largest lead of the game, 12-points (22-10). They led at the half, 25-19.
ASA took the lead for good early in the third quarter, and eventually got it as high as 17 points. Monroe never pulled within a score and fell, 58-54.
In the loss, Soriano posted another double-double with 11 points and ten rebounds. Johnson led the team with 13 points and four steals. Burnett and
Aneisha Lyons totaled ten points apiece.
The Monroe College Women's Basketball team will return to action on Thursday, February 14th, against Columbia-Greene Community College at 7:00 PM.
