Women’s Basketball Cruises to 78-54 Triumph over Sullivan County CC

Mustangs Win 18th Game of Season

New Rochelle, N.Y. – The Monroe College Women's Basketball team prevailed over Sullivan County Community College, 78-54, on Thursday night. The team is 18-6 on the season with one regular-season contest remaining, a major improvement over last season's ten wins.

Neither team gained a strong foothold in the game's first quarter. The score was tied on four different occasions, with the Generals leading at the end of the quarter, 12-10. Monroe would take over in the second.

Using a stifling, full court press defense, the Mustangs forced Sullivan into ten turnovers in the second quarter. Shania Johnson opened the scoring with a three-pointer, giving Monroe a 13-12 lead. A Cristina Soriano layup off a feed from Johnson put the Mustangs up, 27-17, with 3:56 left to the half. A layup from Lisana Burnett with 1:27 left brought the score to 37-19, giving Monroe its largest lead of the half, 18 points. The score stayed there into the half.

Monroe put the game away in the third. They held the Generals to 12 points for the quarter, leading 64-31 at the end. Their largest lead of the game, 41 points, came on a pair of Johnson free throws in the fourth quarter that brought the score to 72-31. The Mustangs went on to win, 78-54.

Four Mustangs reached double figures in scoring. Johnson finished the game with 25 points, eight assists, and eight steals. Soriano had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Burnett totaled 14 points, and Camilla Kilinc finished with 13.

The Monroe College Women's Basketball team will close out its regular season on Sunday, February 18th, in a home game against Columbia-Greene Community College. The tip-off is slated for 2:00 PM. The sophomores will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
