New Rochelle, N.Y. – It was certainly a historic Sophomore Day on Sunday, as a season-best 42-point output from
Shania Johnson paced the team to a 97-48 win over Columbia-Greene Community College. Johnson,
Camilla Kilinc, and
Fatoumata Coulibaly were all honored prior to tip-off, as it was their final home game as Mustangs.
Monroe scored the first six points of the game on a pair of layups from
Cristina Soriano and a Kilinc jumper. A Johnson three-pointer with 2:29 left made the score 15-4, giving Monroe a double-digit lead. They ended the first quarter ahead, 23-7. The lead never got below ten points in the second quarter, and the Mustangs led 41-27 at the half. A Johnson trifecta at 8:33 in the third put Monroe up 20 points, 46-26. She also hit another three-pointer at the end of the quarter to put the Mustangs ahead, 71-38. They went on to win, 97-48.
The Mustangs defense forced the Twins into 37 turnovers while dishing out 29 assists, both second-best for the season. In addition to finishing with ten points,
Lisana Burnett grabbed a season-high eight steals. Johnson had nine assists and six steals. Soriano scored 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Monroe shot 50.6% for the game (43-85). The team will advance to the Region XV championship tournament, which will take place at Westchester Community College in early March.
