UTICA, N.Y., November 5, 2017 – The Monroe Mustangs' women's basketball team fell to Mohawk Valley Community College in the Anthony Torchia Memorial Tournament championship, 68-65, dropping to 1-1 on the season.
The Mustangs trailed the Hawks by four heading into halftime, 30-26, but cut the deficit to two points after outscoring Mohawk Valley, 18-16 in the third quarter.
However, the Mohawk Valley Hawks outscored Monroe by one in the fourth quarter and pulled out a three-point, 68-65 victory.
Amani Williams and
Cristina Soriano led the Mustangs with 13 points apiece, while Soriano added seven rebounds, three blocks and two assists.
As a team, Monroe shot 32.1 percent from the floor and just 14.3 percent from beyond the arc, while the Hawks shot 37.1 percent from the field.
The Mustangs return to action on Saturday, Nov. 11 when they travel to Rochester, N.Y. for the Monroe Community College Tournament.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, will have six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning in the fall of 2017.
