ROCHESTER, N.Y., November 11, 2017 – The Monroe College women's basketball team avenged the loss in their most recent game by defeating Mohawk Valley Community College by a score of 76-67 Saturday afternoon in the first matchup of the Murph Shapiro Tournament, hosted by Monroe Community College. The Mustangs improve to 2-1 on the year, while the Hawks fall to 4-1 with their first loss.
Samantha Hines had a strong game off the bench for the Mustangs, scoring 15 points and picking up nine rebounds. Amani Williams and
Jessica Degree turned in matching 12-point, five-board efforts, while Williams also dished out seven assists and grabbed five steals.
Jada Banks netted 11 points while pulling down seven rebounds, while Christian Soriano just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds while also impressively blocking six shots.
With the win, the Mustangs will advance to the championship game of the Murph Shapiro Tournament against host Monroe Community College on Sunday, Nov. 12. The Mustangs and Tribunes are set to tip off at 12 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, will have six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning in the fall of 2017.
