HAGERSTOWN, Md., November 25, 2017 – The Thanksgiving feast seemed to rejuvenate the Monroe College men's basketball team, as the Mustangs took down Hagerstown Community College, 85-77, Saturday afternoon at Hagerstown's Jim Brown Classic Tournament. The Mustangs improve to 4-2 on the season with Saturday's victory.
Jhery Matos turned in a stellar effort to lead the Mustangs to the win. The sophomore scored a team-high 24 points while grabbing eight rebounds and providing four assists, two blocks and a steal to fill up the stat sheet. Deng Bol Yol netted 11 points, pulled down eight boards and blocked three shots. Bryan Assie tallied eight points and picked up nine rebounds. Clythus Griffith went 9-for-8 from the free-throw line to help him finish with 10 points.
The Mustangs will close out the weekend on Sunday, Nov. 26, when they take on Allegany College of Maryland. The opening tip is set for 1 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, will have six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning in the fall of 2017.
