Monroe Women’s Basketball drops Monroe Classic Finale to ASA College

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., November 19, 2017 – The Monroe College women's basketball team dropped a 64-51 decision to ASA College on Sunday at the Monroe Athletic Complex in the final game of the Monroe Classic Tournament. The Mustangs fall to 3-3 on the year with the setback.

Things got off to a rough start for the Mustangs, as they quickly fell behind, 8-0, to the Avengers. The deficit remained the same throughout the quarter, seeing ASA take a 17-9 lead into the second.

After falling behind, 21-13, Monroe scored five straight to draw within three. Later on, Shanice Graves drained a three to get the Mustangs within a point at 23-22. ASA's Aiden Rainford made a free throw with 1:09 left, sending the game to the half with ASA ahead, 24-22.

The Mustangs fell behind by seven again early in the third frame, but scored five straight to draw within two. Later on, a pair of free throws by Samantha Hines shrunk the deficit to just one. A three by ASA's Caitlin Roche with 1:14 left made it a five-point game, but Hines made a layup just 20 seconds later, sending the game to the fourth with the Mustangs trailing, 41-38.

ASA led 44-42 before going on a nine-point run and taking an 11-point advantage. The Mustangs were able to get back within six with 1:26 to play, but were unable to get back on the board, falling by 13.

Hines led the Mustangs with 12 points and a pair of blocks in Sunday's loss. Amani Williams added 11 points and three assists. Lisana Burnett picked up a team-high 13 rebounds.

The Mustangs take a couple weeks off before getting back to work on Friday, Dec. 1, with the start of the Charm City Classic, hosted by Baltimore City Community College. They will take on Monroe Community College on Friday at 6 p.m. to kick off the three-day tournament.
