Mustangs JV Men’s Basketball Races Past Woodstock

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y, November 18, 2017 – Behind a 34-8 run to end the first half, the Monroe Mustangs' JV men's basketball team galloped past the Woodstock Academy Centaurs, 80-64, Saturday at the Monroe Athletic Complex.
 
Joshua Washington gave the Mustangs' a 2-0 lead with his early bucket in the first half, and Monroe never trailed thereafter. The Mustangs built a four-point lead, 20-16, with 12:03 to play, before taking off on a 34-8 run to end the half with a 30-point, 54-24 lead.
 
Isaiah Allen-Smith's 10 first-half points, along with eight points apiece from Nolen Irby and Joans Gjeci in the first half, helped key the Mustangs out to a 30-point halftime lead.
 
From there Monroe coasted in the second half, maintaining their 30-point lead for most of the second half and taking home an 80-64 victory to move to 4-2 on the year.
 
Allen-Smith led the way for Monroe with 14 points, followed by 12 points from Irby and 10 from Gjeci. On the glass, Allen-Smith and Marcus Thompson each tallied seven boards.
 
Monroe shot 44.9 percent from the floor, and 50.0 percent in the first half, while holding the Centaurs to 40.0 percent shooting and 31.03 percent in the first half.
 
The Mustangs also outrebounded Woodstock Academy by 12, and outscored the Centaurs, 52-24 in the paint.
 
Monroe is back in action on Sunday, Nov. 19 when they take on the Army Preparatory Academy at 5 p.m. at the Monroe Athletic Complex in New Rochelle, N.Y.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, will have six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning in the fall of 2017.
