UPPER MARLBORO, Md., November 10, 2017 – The Monroe Mustangs JV men's basketball team topped Capital Christian Academy, 78-73 on Friday, to move to 3-0 on the season.
The Mustangs took a 12-point lead into halftime, leading the Red Storm, 35-23, and although Capital Christian battled back, outscoring the Mustangs by 7 in the second half, Monroe was able to hold on and pull out the victory, 78-73.
Led by Isaiah Allen-Smith's 17, four Mustangs tallied double-figures as Monroe shot 50 percent from the floor.
Nolen Irby, Marcus Thompson and Joshua Washington joined Allen-Smith in double-figures, scoring 12, 15 and 10 points respectively.
Thompson fell one rebound shy of a double-double, leading the Mustangs with nine rebounds, while Washington led the team in steals with a season-high six.
Monroe took advantage of 27 personal fouls by the Red Storm, leading to 33 free throw attempts for the Mustangs, compared to just six for Capital Christian, to take home the victory.
Monroe continues their weekend road trip, heading to Rockville, Md. on Saturday, Oct. 11 to take on Montgomery College-Rockville as part of the Montgomery College tipoff.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, will have six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning in the fall of 2017.
