MELBOURNE, Fla., October 7, 2017 – The Monroe College women's soccer team closed out its trip down south to Florida with one of its biggest wins of the season, knocking off previously undefeated and nationally-ranked No. 4 Daytona State College by a score of 2-1 in a contest played at Eastern Florida State College's Titan Soccer Complex. The Mustangs improve to 5-4 on the year with Saturday's big victory, while the Falcons fall to 8-1.
Yolanda Albalat got Monroe on the board in the 17th minute after recovering a rebound and firing past the keeper for an early 1-0 lead. The Mustangs played tough on defense, and held on to the one-score lead through halftime.

Juliana Pires with a filter pass in the box, leading to a goal for Pires to push Monroe's lead to 2-0. The Falcons made a push late in the game after Shanade Hopcroft scored in the 85th minute, but the Mustangs held strong to hang on for the victory.
Oriana Palacios made two saves to earn the win and improve to 2-3 on the season on Saturday. Daytona State keeper Kristian Shores falls to 8-1 after giving up two goals and making one stop.
Albalat led the Mustangs with three shots, and put her only shot on goal past the keeper in the win. Pires scored what proved to be the game-winner, which was set up by Gonzalez.
Catherine Hayes also put a shot on net for the Mustangs.
Monroe takes to the road once again on Tuesday, Oct. 10, when the Mustangs visit Community College of Rhode Island in Warwick, R.I. The game is set to kick off at 3 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, will have six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning in the fall of 2017.
