Albalat’s Four-Goal Day Lifts Monroe Women’s Soccer Past Sussex County

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., October 14, 2017 – In its final regular season home contest of the season, the Monroe College women's soccer team defeated Sussex County Community College by a score of 6-1, led by Yolanda Albalat's four goals Saturday afternoon at City Park. The Mustangs improve to 6-4 on the year with the win, while Sussex County falls to 8-5-2.
 
Albalat scored each of the first three goals of the game for the Mustangs, all of which were assisted by Juliana Pires. She added one more in the second half for a career-high four goals. Pires picked up her sixth goal of the year in the second half to cap off a five-point afternoon.
 
Albalat's first score came in the fourth minute off a filter ball from Pires to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. She scored again just 42 seconds later, again off an assist from Pires, to double the lead. Albalat scored once more in the 32nd minute off another feed from Pires, eventually sending the game to halftime with a 3-0 score.
 
Pires opened the second half with a goal off a free kick in the 58th minute to make it a 4-0 game. Gema Fernandez scored in the 74th minute off another free kick to push Monroe's lead to five. Albalat then netted her fourth of the day from inside the box in the 79th minute put the Mustangs up by six. Gabby Sarni got the Skylanders on the board at the 84:06 mark, but the Mustangs held on for the five-goal win.
 
Carmen Proffitt made three saves in the first half to earn the win and improve to 2-1 on the season. Oriana Palacios played the final 45 minutes for the Mustangs. Katie Bertoa made five saves and allowed six goals to fall to 6-4-1 for the Skylanders.
 
Albalat tried a team-high seven shots and all put all four of her shots on goal past the keeper in the win. Pires provided three assists and a goal while trying four shots. Fernandez also attempted four shots, putting all of them on goal and getting one in the net.
 
Monroe held a 20-5 edge in total shots on Saturday, including an 11-4 advantage in shots on net. The Mustangs also earned all five of the game's corner kicks.
 
The Mustangs hit the road on Tuesday, Oct. 17, to visit Mercer County Community College in Trenton, N.J. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, will have six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning in the fall of 2017.
