MELBOURNE, Fla., October 6, 2017 – The Monroe College women's soccer team trekked down to Florida this weekend to take on a pair of top-ranked team. The Mustangs opened the weekend against host No. 6 Eastern Florida State College, falling to the Titans by a score of 2-0 Friday evening. Monroe falls to 4-4 with the loss, while the Titans improve to 5-1 on the season.
A tight first half saw the Mustangs outshoot their hosts, 4-1, but tough defense on both sides kept the game scoreless through the first 45 minutes. Eastern Florida got on the board in the 63rd minute when Nathali Da Silva scored to the top-right corner of the net off a free kick to put the home team up by a goal. The Mustangs kept their aggression up and fired off a few chances at the net, but they were unable to get one past the keeper. Eastern Florida added one more in the 85th minute to cap off a 2-0 decision.

Yolanda Albalat each tried three shots in the game, with Ponce and Fernandez putting two shots on goal apiece. Monroe finished the game with a 12-8 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in shots on net. The Mustangs also earned five corner kicks, while yielding just three to the Titans.
The Mustangs will look to get back on track in another tough matchup on Saturday, Oct. 7, when they take on No. 4 Daytona State College in Melbourne, Fla. Saturday's contest is set to kick off at 6 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, will have six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning in the fall of 2017.
