Monroe Women’s Volleyball Continues Home Shutout Streak with Win over Queensborough

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., October 5, 2017 – The Monroe Mustangs women's volleyball team ran its home shutout streak to four matches with a 3-0 victory over Queensborough Community College Thursday evening at the Monroe Athletic Complex. Monroe improves to 14-7 with the win, while the Tigers drop to 10-3.
 
The Mustangs took a quick 6-3 lead, forcing the Tigers to call their first timeout. After the Tigers won a point to make it 13-9, Monroe went on a nine-point run to claim a 22-9 lead, eventually leading to a 25-13 win in the opening frame.
 
The Tigers looked to be in control early in the second game, going point-for-point with the Mustangs before taking a 6-5 lead. Monroe then strung together seven straight to take a 12-6 advantage and force Queensborough to burn a timeout. The Tigers closed within four again at 13-9, but the Mustangs continued to hold serve and grab a 21-11 lead. After a couple points for Queensborough, the Mustangs scored the final three points for a 25-15 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
Monroe jumped out to a 5-0 lead to kick off the third set, but the Tigers closed within three at 7-4. The Mustangs then took 11 of the next 13 points to run out to an 18-6 advantage. The Mustangs had match point at 24-11, but the Tigers managed to put three more points on the board before a kill by Kyra Kaloi closed out the match.
 
Keyshla Laureano Perez led the floor with nine kills and a .353 hitting percentage Thursday evening. Alexis Baer passed out 14 assists and served up three aces, while Daline Rios contributed 11 assists and four aces. Nashally Eleutiza had a team-high 14 digs.
 
The Mustangs take the weekend off before making a short trip to Garden City, N.Y. on Tuesday, Oct. 10, where they will take on Nassau Community College. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, will have six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning in the fall of 2017.
