GARDEN CITY, N.Y., October 10, 2017 – The Monroe College women's volleyball team ran its winning streak to five straight matches on Tuesday, as the Mustangs defeated Nassau Community College, 3-0, at Nassau's Main Gym. The Mustangs improve to 15-7 on the year with the victory, while the Lions fall to 15-9.
The Lions took the early advantage in the first frame, running out to a 6-1 lead over the Mustangs. The lead grew to 9-2 for Nassau before Monroe started to chip away. Monroe took 11-of-16 points to get back within one, and after falling behind, 16-14, Monroe took the next four points to take an 18-16 advantage. The Mustangs allowed just two more points the rest of the set, while taking seven more to claim a 25-18 win.
The close first set lit a fire under the Mustangs, who jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the second frame. Later, a five-point run pushed Monroe's lead to 16-6. After the Lions got within nine at 18-9, Monroe closed out the game with seven straight points for a 25-9 win and a 2-0 lead on the evening.
Monroe's momentum continued in the third stanza, as the Mustangs took an immediate 14-0 lead. There was not much give to the Mustangs' attack in the final frame, as they closed things out with a 25-4 win for the victory.
Alexis Baer had a solid evening with 17 assists, seven aces, seven digs and three kills.
Marissa Hackett threw down eight kills and hit .667 on the evening.
Maria Camila Salazar matched her with a .667 clip while adding six kills.
Nashally Eleutiza picked up a team-high 13 digs, while
Anyela Aquino added 10 of her own.
Keyshla Laureano Perez hit .556 with six kills.
The Mustangs will now get set for their final regular-season road trip this weekend, as they travel out to Council Bluffs, Iowa, for the Iowa Western Community College Tournament. The weekend begins on Friday, Oct. 13, with matches against Central Community College-Columbus and Iowa Lakes Community College.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, will have six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning in the fall of 2017.
