WEST WINDSOR, N.J., October 17, 2017 – Fueled by a pair of goals for
Juliana Pires and three points by
Yolanda Albalat, the Monroe College women's soccer team picked up a 3-0 victory on the road at Mercer County Community College Tuesday evening. The Mustangs improve to 7-4 on the season and have now won three straight games, while the Vikings drop to 4-10-1.
Neither team managed to put one in the net in the first half despite 18 attempted shots by the Mustangs. Albalat put the Mustangs in the lead off a cross from
Alba Gonzalez in the 48th minute. Pires then netted her first of the day in the 59th minute after a one-two combination with Albalat, putting the Mustangs ahead, 2-0. Pires added one more at the 85:21 mark off a filter ball from
Andrea Rodriguez, putting Monroe up by three in the final minutes.
Goalkeeper
Oriana Palacios picked up the win on Tuesday and registered her first shutout to improve to 3-3 overall on the year. Mercer County keeper Shaunice Palms allowed all three goals to fall to 4-10-1.
Pires tried nine shots in the game, putting five on target and two in the net. Albalat scored once on five shots, while both Gonzalez and
Gema Fernandez matched her five shots on the evening.
The Mustangs dominated the shots in game, trying 34 across 90 minutes, while allowing just one throughout the game. Monroe also earned nine corner kicks in the win, while the Vikings did not have one.
The Mustangs play next on Monday, Oct. 23, when they visit No. 13 ASA College for a rematch of their contest from Sept. 29. The Region XV matchup is set to begin at 12 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, will have six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning in the fall of 2017.
