COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa, October 14, 2017 – The Monroe College women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday in its final day at the Reiver Festival, hosted by Iowa Western Community College. The Mustangs defeated Highland Community College (Kansas), 3-0, but fell to No. 3 Iowa Western, 3-0. Monroe leaves Iowa with a 17-9 record on the season.
MATCH 1: MONROE 3, HIGHLAND 0
The Mustangs came out firing to start their first match, winning the first set, 25-11. They maintained their momentum in the second frame to claim a 25-15 win and a 2-0 lead. Highland made it close in the final frame, but the Mustangs held on for a 25-21 win and a 3-0 win in the match.
MATCH 2: #3 IOWA WESTERN 3, MONROE 0
Monroe took on its toughest opponent of the weekend in its final match, No. 3-ranked, and tournament host, Iowa Western. A close first set went the way of the Reivers, 25-21. Monroe and Iowa Western then went back-and-forth in the second frame, but the Reivers came out on top, 26-24. Iowa Western then finished the match off with a 25-11 win for the 3-0 victory.
The Mustangs will now return home and play next on Friday, Oct. 20, when they host Fashion Institute of Technology at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, will have six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning in the fall of 2017.
