New Rochelle, N.Y. - The Monroe College JV Basketball team improved to 9-9 with a 66-52 victory over Harcum College on Thursday. A surge late in the first half gave the Mustangs a lead that they kept for the rest of the game.
Andre Morgan had a hand in the first two buckets of the game as Monroe grabbed a 4-0 lead. After his first offensive rebound,
Michael-Roy Miller opened the scoring. On the next offensive possession for the Mustangs, Morgan pulled down an offensive board and scored on a put back. Harcum fought back to tie the game at 6-6 just six minutes into action.
From there, a pair of
Kenwyn Christian foul shots gave Monroe an 8-6 lead. The game was back and forth for the next minutes, until Monroe pulled ahead 16-14 on a
Mario Hernandez free throw. The lead grew as large as ten points, when a
Kaynaan Longley put back brought the score to 30-20 with 2:32 left. The score at the half was 32-22.
The Bears opened the second half by methodically cutting into the lead, getting as close as five points, 42-37. Monroe answered with a 6-0 scoring run that pushed the lead to 11 points with 11:43 left. Harcum came back and got within four points (50-46) with 5:31 left, forcing a Mustangs' timeout.
Out of the respite, Monroe rattled off nine straight points to lead 59-46. The largest lead, 17 points, came on a
James Brady three-pointer that made the score 64-47 with 1:57 to go. Monroe went on to win, 66-52.
Morgan earned a double-double in the victory with 22 points and 15 rebounds on 8-10 shooting. Christian scored 15 points. Monroe's defense forced 30 turnovers from Harcum.
The Monroe College JV Basketball team will return to action on Saturday, January 28th, against Commonwealth Academy at 1:00 PM in Springfield, Massachusetts.
