New Rochelle, N.Y. – The Monroe College Junior Varsity Basketball team spent the weekend upstate and came away with a win over St. John Fisher College and an overtime loss to Herkimer County Community College. The team is now 8-9 on the season.
The Mustangs defeated the Cardinals, 64-55. Four Monroe players reached double figures in scoring, led by
Andre Morgan's 14-point effort.
James Brady totaled 12 points,
Michael-Roy Miller had 11, and
Kenwyn Christian scored 10.
The game was tied at 26-all at halftime, but the Mustangs pulled away in the second half. Monroe opened the second half with a 15-4 run, bringing the score to 41-30. Baskets came from Brady, Miller, Morgan, Christian, and
Nolen Irby. St. John Fisher rallied and got as close as five points, but the Mustangs went on to win, 64-55.
The next day, the team fell to Herkimer in overtime, 81-80. With the score tied, 13-13, at 13:36 on the first half, Monroe used a 13-2 scoring spree to grab a 26-15 advantage. Brady, Christian, Irby, Morgan, and
Lamontrell Rice accounted for the scoring. A Brady three-pointer at 3:19 gave the Mustangs a 14-point cushion. They led 42-28 at the break.
Another Brady basket at 12:49 made the score 55-38, giving Monroe their largest lead of the game. The Generals fought back and tied the score at 63-all with 4:47 left. A free throw from Morgan in the final minute put Monroe ahead, 72-70, but a Herkimer layup in the closing seconds sent the game to overtime.
In the extra session, Monroe trailed until the final minute. An Irby layup with 0:58 remaining put the Mustangs ahead, 79-78. A Rice foul shot with 0:10 left made the score 80-78. Herkimer pulled out the 81-80 victory with a three-pointer as time expired.
Morgan had a double-double, with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Brady netted 15 points, while Irby scored 14 and Rice had a dozen off the bench.
The Monroe College JV Basketball team will return to action on Thursday, January 26
th, against the Harcum College JV team at 5:00 PM. This will be a doubleheader with the varsity team, which will also face Harcum at 7:00 PM.
