Scranton, Pa. – The Monroe College Men's Basketball team defeated Lackawanna College 77-66 in a game played in Scranton, Pennsylvania on Thursday. The win improved to the team's record to 16-6 overall and they have prevailed in six of their last seven games.
Early on, Monroe was falling behind, trailing 15-6 just five minutes into action. The deficit grew to 12 points before the Mustangs responded. Trailing 25-13, a 9-0 run pulled Monroe within 25-22. The scoring spree came from
Bryan Assie,
Mouhamadou Gueye and
Will Martinez. The Mustangs took the lead for the first time in the game courtesy of a
Tyler Ancrum jumper with 2:45 left. They trailed at the half, 37-34.
The second half was the key to victory for Monroe. They scored 43 points and limited Lackawanna to 29 points. Monroe tried fiercely to tie the score, eventually doing so on a free throw from
Donald Butler at 14:34. The lead for the Mustangs reached double digits when
Dani Koljanin nailed a foul shot with 3:54 left. A
Clifton Tracey foul shot with 0:13 remaining put Monroe up 13, their largest advantage of the game. They won the game 77-66.
Will Martinez had 13 points and seven steals. Koljanin finished with 14 points and nine rebounds. The team returns to action on Monday, January 23, when they host Rock Top Prep at 7PM.
