New Rochelle, N.Y. – All the excitement of the JV men's basketball team occurred in the final minute of play in the game between Monroe and the Robinson School on Thursday in New Rochelle. A three-point-play from
Michael-Roy Miller put the Mustangs up two, before a buzzer beater sent the Phoenix home with a 68-67 victory.
The Mustangs dominated play in the first half. Up 11-10, Monroe tallied five straight to lead 16-10. The lead increased to double-digits when a three-pointer by
Nolen Irby made the score 24-14 with 8:00 left. Six straight points from the Phoenix made the score 24-20 and forced a Monroe timeout. The game went back and forth from there and the Mustangs led at halftime, 36-33.
The advantage doubled to six points early in the second half, but the Robinson School kept the score close until an
Andre Morgan tip in made the score 49-41 with under 14:00 left. A
Mario Hernandez basket at 12:47 put the Mustangs up 10. The Robinson school fought back and tied the score at 54-54 with 8:30 remaining.
From there, Robinson School took a six-point lead heading into the final minutes of action. In the last three minutes, Monroe turned up the defensive intensity, forcing Robinson into several turnovers and getting within two points on a
Michael-Roy Miller ayup with a minute left.
In the final minute, Monroe forced another turnover and Miller got to the line. He made one of two and the Mustangs were within a point, down 65-64. After a defensive stop led to a fast break, Irby found Miller for a hoop, and Monroe took a 66-65 lead. After he completed the three-point play, Saquan Young threw up a three-pointer that went in to give the Phoenix a 68-67 win.
James Brady reached double-figures for the third straight game, netting a game-high 21 points. Miller finished with 11, while
Andre Morgan was a perfect 3-3 from the field.
The team is now 6-7 for the season. The Monroe College JV basketball team returns to action on Saturday, January 14, when they face Harrisburg Area Community College at 2:00 pm in Pennsylvania.
