New Rochelle, N.Y. – A strong defensive effort helped the Monroe College Women's Basketball team to a 54-44 victory over ASA College on Tuesday. Four Mustangs reached double figures in the victory.
ASA led 17-8 after the first ten minutes of action.
Cristina Soriano scored the first four points of the quarter.
Shania Johnson then buried a three-pointer, bringing Monroe within two points at 17-15.
Aneisha Lyons tied the game with a pair of fouls shots. The Mustangs took the lead for good on a Lyons bucket with 1:22 left. Monroe held ASA to a basket and a pair of layups in the second quarter and led at the half, 22-21.
Monroe opened the third quarter with a 10-0 run, widening the lead to 11 at 32-21.
Lisana Burnett accounted for four points, while Johnson and
Camilla Kilinc each made a three-pointer. The lead grew as large as a dozen points on a Burnett basket early in the fourth quarter. Monroe never looked back, and went on to win, 54-44.
In the victory, Johnson led the team with 13 points, while Kilinc earned 11 and added 4 assists. Soriano and Lyons each finished with ten.
The Monroe College Women's Basketball team will return to action on Thursday, January 19
th, against Lackawanna College at 5:00 PM in Scranton.
