Scranton, Pa. – The Monroe College women's basketball team defeated Lackawanna 75-49, on Thursday night in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The victory marked the fourth-straight win for the team.
Shania Johnson led the offense with a game-high 30 points.
Johnson scored the first five points of the game, giving the Mustangs a 5-0 lead. Lackawanna buried a pair of free throws to put them up by 1 point, 10-9, with 4:52 left.
Lisana Burnett responded with a layup and Monroe regained the lead, 11-10. The Mustangs led 17-11 after the first quarter.
Monroe used a 10-2 run to open the second quarter and push the lead to 27-13. A Johnson three-pointer increased the lead by ten. A foul shot from
Fatoumata Coulibaly gave Monroe its 27
th point, and they led 31-17 at the half.
In the third quarter, the Mustangs culminated with a 26-point advantage after a Johnson layup with 5:52 remaining. The Mustangs led 57-36 after three-quarters. Monroe never looked back in the fourth quarter, going on to win 75-49.
Cristina Soriano totaled 12 points and eight rebounds.
Jessica DeGree put in eight and grabbed ten rebounds. The team returns to action on Thursday, February 2, when they host Union County College.
