New Rochelle, N.Y. – The Monroe College Junior Varsity Basketball team improved to 6-6 and broke a three-game losing streak with a 71-62 win over New York International Academy on Tuesday. A second-half surge keyed the victory.
The game was back and forth early on, with neither side able to gain momentum. At the 12:55 mark, NYIA called a timeout, ahead 17-15. Following the respite, Monroe took over.
Andre Morgan tied the game at 17-17 with an offensive rebound and foul line jumper. Monroe took the lead on the very next possession, when
Lamontrell Rice finished with a layup. A couple of buckets put the Eagles ahead at the half, 39-35.
A three-point play by Morgan put Monroe up, 40-39, with 16:58 left. It was their first lead of the half. From there, the Mustangs pushed the lead to 48-41 on an 8-2 run. Morgan accounted for three points and
James Brady netted five in the scoring spree. The Eagles fought back and got as close as a point, at 54-53, but Monroe answered again, got the lead back up to nine, and went on to win, 71-62.
Morgan was the offensive star for the Mustangs, totaling a career-high 27 points and 11 rebounds. Brady finished with 11 points and has reached double-figures in both of his appearances this season. Rice shot 4-of-7 in the game.
The Monroe College JV Basketball team will return to action on Thursday, January 12, hosting the Robinson School at 5:00 PM.
