Monroe Volleyball Picks Up Five Wins at Owens Community College Tournament

Mustangs Improve to 5-4 on the Season

Toledo, Ohio – The Monroe College volleyball team had an impressive showing over Labor Day weekend, posting a 5-1 record at the Owens Community College Tournament in Toledo, Ohio. The Mustangs picked up wins over Waubonsee Community College (3-0), Oakland Community College (3-0), Vincennes University (3-1), Muskegon Community College (3-1), and McHenry County College (3-0). The only blemish on their performance was a day-three loss to tournament host Owens Community College.
 
Monroe opened play with a 3-0 win over Waubonsee on Friday. The scores were 25-15, 27-25, and 25-22. The offensive stars were Kathrin Pasel with 16 kills and Cristen Coryatt with 14 kills. Carla Souffront totaled 32 assists, marking the third time she has exceeded the 30 assist plateau. Neysha Gonzalez led the Mustangs with 19 digs.
 
The second game saw Monroe defeat Oakland Community College, 25-20, 25-20, and 25-12. The triumph over the Raiders was keyed by 13 kills from Coryatt and 24 assists from Souffront. Coryatt has reached double-digits in kills in all but the season opener.
 
Day two saw the Mustangs pick up a pair of 3-1 wins over Vincennes and Muskegon. The scores against the Flames were 22-25, 25-18, 25-19, and 32-30. Monroe dropped the first set, but rebounded to take the next three, including a hard-fought and contentious fourth set. Coryatt (22 kills and 16 digs) and Pasel (18 kills and 13 digs) each had double-doubles, while Gabriela Nobrega dished out 17 assists.
 
The four-set win over Muskegon had scores of 25-15, 23-25, 25-21, and 25-21. Pasel led the Mustangs with 15 kills.
 
The third day saw Monroe fall to Owens Community College with scores of 14-25, 25-20, 18-25, and 21-25. The second set saw Monroe pull ahead from a 16-16 tie. They closed out the set with a Coryatt block.
 
The final match of the tournament saw Monroe defeat the McHenry Scots 25-11, 25-23, and 25-20. Souffront had 29 assists and Gonzalez picked up 14 digs.
 
The Monroe College volleyball team will return to action on Thursday, September 8th, against Blinn College in Texas.
