Avery Point, Conn. – The Monroe College baseball team squandered a pair of strong pitching efforts on Sunday in a doubleheader loss to UConn-Avery Point. Anthony Hernandez tossed a complete game in the opener and fell to 1-2, while Francis Ortiz allowed only one earned run in the second game. The Mustangs are now 21-11 on the season. The two teams had split a doubleheader in New Rochelle earlier in the season.

Game one went to Avery Point 3-0. Monroe had three hits in the game, one apiece from Ramger Iglesias, Alex De La Cruz and Isaiah Torres. Hernandez threw a complete game, allowing just four hits and striking out five over six innings of work.

Game two began more auspiciously for the Mustangs as they took a 3-0 lead with a pair of runs in the fourth and another in the fifth. In the fourth, Cam Crabbe led off with a double. He moved to third on an infield hit from Torres. Ronald Jackson drove in the first run with a single that scored Crabbe. C.J. Moore followed with an infield hit that plated Torres to bring the score to 2-0.
Â
De La Cruz led off the fifth with a hit. He came in on an RBI single off of Crabbe's bat. Avery Point tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. The game went to extra innings, and UConn scored the game winner on an unearned run in the eighth.
