Valhalla, N.Y. – The Monroe College baseball team improved to 23-11 overall with a doubleheader sweep of Globe Tech at Westchester Community College in Valhalla, New York on Monday. The Mustangs are 5-1 in Region XV competition following their 9-3 and 14-6 triumphs.

Game one saw Monroe starter
Tony Hernandez raise his record to an unblemished 6-0 mark. He tossed a complete game, striking out 11 across seven innings. The Mustangs gave him enough offense, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first three innings.

Ramger Iglesias reached base on an error. He stole second and scored the game's first run on an RBI single from
Endy Villalona. Later in the inning,
Isaiah Torres executed a perfect squeeze bunt that drove in
Alex De La Cruz, who had reached via a walk. Monroe led 2-0 after an inning.

The score rose to 3-0 in the second.
C.J. Moore led off with a double before stealing third and coming in on an RBI ground out from
Ronald Jackson. The run in the third came when De La Cruz was hit by a pitch. The crafty base runner stole second, moved to third on an out and scored on another out from
Cam Crabbe.

Globe got back in the game by scoring three times in the fourth, but Monroe countered an inning later. With two runners on base, Villalona connected on his second hit of the day, a two-RBI double that scored Iglesias and De La Cruz, bringing the score to 6-3, Mustangs.

They put game one away in the sixth by scoring three times. A hit from
John Russo, a sacrifice fly from De La Cruz and an out from Villalona accounted for the three runs. The Mustangs won 9-3. Villalona led Monroe with three hits and four RBIs.

Game two was more of a slugfest, with the Mustangs collecting a dozen hits. Every batter in the Monroe lineup reached base in the game.
Edwin Gonzalez took the start, but
Oliver Mailloux got the win in relief.
Fernando Figueroa also pitched scoreless work in relief.

Globe Tech scored three times in the first inning to grab the lead. The Mustangs took it back with four runs in the third. Monroe got a pair of unearned runs on a walk to Iglesias, an error during De La Cruz's at-bat and an out from Torres. Crabbe later scored on a wild pitch, and
Lewis Gonzalez ripped an RBI single for the fourth run. Gonzalez paced Monroe with three RBIs in the game. He also had a pair of hits, including a double.

Monroe pushed the lead to 6-3 in the fifth by scoring twice. Torres reached on a base hit. From there, Villalona plated him with a triple to right center. He then scored on a wild pitch.

Globe answered in their half of the fifth by scoring three times, driving Gonzalez from the box. Mailloux entered in relief and stopped the dam from breaking, but the damage was done and the game was tied at 6-6.

Monroe put the game away in the next inning with eight runs. They got six hits in the inning. Jackson doubled and scored on a wild pitch.
Josue Perez reached on a walk, and later came in on an RBI hit from Torres. De La Cruz scored on the back end of a double steal. Gonzalez's second hit of the game was a two-RBI double that plated Crabbe and Torres and put Monroe ahead 11-6. Jackson came up for the second time in the inning and got an RBI double. Finally, Russo drove in a pair on a base hit.

Mailloux and Figueroa retired Globe in the bottom of the sixth without scoring, and the game ended via the eight-run rule. The Monroe College baseball team will return to action on Wednesday, April 20, when they face Rowan College at Burlington County in New Jersey. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 PM.
